Production Intern

DUTIES – Performs varied row crop production functions under minimum supervision from PCA supervisor.  The majority of time will be dedicated to scouting for pests and diseases independently and reporting findings on a daily basis.  Responsible for monitoring and documenting research trials in plant nutrition, plant diseases, insect and weed control.  Activities require the use of initiative and judgment, particularly when prioritizing work or working with a diverse group of employees and service companies.

 Knowledge of:

  • Basic knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations regarding pesticide use
  • Practical knowledge of row crops
  • Basic understanding of plant nutrition, plant disease and pest and weed control
  • Operation of standard office equipment, including personal computers, photocopiers, fax machines and appropriate software such as Windows, MS Word and Excel

 Responsibilities:

  • Monitor insect, weed populations, plant pathogens, nematodes and vertebrate pests
  • Learn cultural practices of growing cool season vegetables in the central coast region
  • Assist in in-house production projects through research and trial experimentation
  • Enforce company pesticide safety policies
  • Conduct soil and water samples

Qualifications:

  • In the process of obtaining a BA/BS in Agricultural related field with emphasis in pest management or biological science
  • Ability to obtain PCA license
  • Bilingual English/Spanish highly desired
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to communicate with all levels of management and operations personnel
  • Thrive in a fast paced environment and handle pressure while managing multiple tasks
  • Organized team player who works well with a variety of people with a minimum of supervision
  • Solid problem solving skills with a methodical approach
  • Valid driver’s license and clean record
  • Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Basic knowledge and experience with Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Correct English usage, including spelling, grammar, punctuation and vocabulary
  • Willingness and ability to work weekends
